ArtAboutOil intends to raise public awareness about the impact of petrol on the environment and to increase knowledge about something that has become an emerging issue for the health of the environment, citizens and economic resources of Basilicata (Southern Italy region) territory, of tourism and of agriculture.

The promoters of ArtAboutOil are four creative realities that operate in Basilicata, Southern Italy and abroad in the field of social innovation, theatre, cinema, creativity and territory. Protecting the environment is to look at the future and above all preserve it; the defence of the territory is to protect public health and the wellbeing of an entire region and its future generations. Art represents a fundamental cultural thread, a means by which to stop the destruction of the territory, building new visions. Learning how to choose the future is the necessity of a Region that can only grow through new types of energetic development, those that are sustainable. Visual art was chosen as the narrative because it effectively and immediately tells a story about a complex and difficult reality such as that of the pollution that the oil industry is generating in Basilicata, to avoid exploitation that doesn’t consider the health and interests of the local people and landscape. The project believes that the political energy of a territory must be considered a common good and as such belong to all of its citizens. Telling all this through art will be just the beginning.

ArtAboutOil is an international competition to participate in an artistic residence in Basilicata, produce a video and make it viral to spread the voice. The sponsoring associations have not received any external funding for the grant. Therefore the prize will draw from the resources each of the founders and each investor is able to invest in the project: actors, equipment, travel, board and accommodation will all be the result of a union of the strengths and availability from each reality involved and thanks to the contribution of external actors who decide to invest in the initiative and enrich the prize. We are convinced that such an action has a strong symbolic meaning, as we believe that only by starting from activation of forces and local resources will it be possible to build a new future and new policies for the region.
